Support Your Wellness with a Good Book: A House in the Sky

We’re enjoying summer holidays and the free time that comes with time off. We’re both avid readers and we belong to a book club with other women from our community. Each month, we take turns choosing a book and hosting the book club meeting and discussion. We’ve been doing this for a few years and it’s something we both really enjoy. Reading is a wonderful way to rest and recharge, whether it’s on summer holidays or during the school year, so we try to share our book recommendations with you as part of our goal to support fellow educators with teaching, tech integration and teacher wellness.

A House in the Sky
Amanda Lindhout & Sara Corbett
5/5 stars

A House in the Sky by Amanda Lindhout and Sara Corbett was our book for this month’s book club. In this memoir, Amanda Lindhout shares the terrifying details of her kidnapping in Somalia. Her story is interesting, but also very upsetting to read. As a captive held for ransom, she endured unthinkable hardship and abuse. The story describes her experiences as a hostage and showcases her strength in surviving physical, mental and emotional challenges. This young Canadian woman showed great bravery not only in enduring captivity, but also in writing her story to share with the world.

If you decide to pick this one up, be prepared for some shocking recounts of abuse and hardship. The book was a page-turner for me because I needed to know how she survived to write this book, but it was difficult to read at times too. This is an excellent memoir telling an intimate story of strength, determination and human connection. It is certainly worth adding to your reading list
