Museum Hacking

The Museum Hack

Have you ever taken your students to a museum–either an online or in-person visit? Museums offer a huge potential for powerful experiential learning experiences. There are strong links to many curricular topics but even better opportunities to teach critical thinking skills and disrupt traditional portrayals of history.

Devon took her Brandon University Social Studies Methods class to Daly House Museum to explore the connections between museums and the teaching of social studies. We also implemented Clover, Taber, & Sanford’s (2018) museum hack strategy to examine the museum exhibits through a critical lens. Museum hacking is a great learning experience for all ages of students (with different supports and pre-teaching, of course) and works well in both in-person and online museum visits. Read on to learn more about this strategy.
