Promoting Choice as we Evolve Remote Learning

I’ve been asked to co-host the June #MicrosoftEduChat TweetMeet on the topic of evolving remote learning.  I’ve been working with a team of global educators to plan the chat and reflect on this topic.  To me, evolving remote learning means changing, improving and growing our practice to make remote learning as successful as possible.

There is a lot we don’t know about the future.  There are many challenges in education right now. It’s hard to know what learning might look like in the coming months.  However, whatever model of teaching and learning we adopt going forward, I think we can continue to focus on pedagogically-sound practices.

One thing that we know is important for learning is student choice

Over the past several weeks of remote teaching, I’ve been able to connect with many educators through my professional learning network.  I’ve seen so many incredible ideas, but one that aligns with the best practice of providing student choice is the use of choice boards.

A choice board (or learning menu) presents various learning activities for learners to choose from. They work well for in-classroom learning or remote learning.

Strengths of Choice Boards

  • Choice is important for students to have some control and ownership over their learning
  • Flexibility for which tasks students complete may make things easier for students and their families. Students have the option to do what they can, when they can.
  • Differentiation – The learning activities included on your choice board can vary in difficulty. Students can do more or fewer activities depending on what they can manage.
  • Adaptability – Choice boards can be adapted for any age and subject area. The choices you present can reflect age-appropriate learning activities for a specific topic or a variety of subjects.

Choice Board Templates

I’ve created very simple choice board templates using slides. You can download them below and customize them to suit your students’ needs.
